RE:            CFI Innovation Fund Update – Draft Call for Proposals for consultation

The CFI has released the draft call for proposals for consultation. It can be found here.

We welcome your views and opinions on the University’s approach to this competition as well as the CFI draft call for Proposals by October 23.  Should you have questions, you are welcome to be in touch with me, Judith Chadwick, Assistant Vice-President, Research Services or MayLiza Baak, Executive Director, Research Services.

The total funding for this competition is $250M with an accompanying $75M through the IOF program.   The Notice of Intent deadline is March 28 and a full proposal deadline June 27.  Funding decisions are expected March 2015.  Funding for this competition, while approximately $100M more than the 2012 competition, is still less than half of that in previous years.  Based on the 3 year average of Tri-agency funding, the University + partner hospitals envelope is $105.3M.  This is compared to $67.6M in the 2012 competition.

In the last two competitions, we applied an excellence-based, peer-reviewed approach for selecting campus-based proposals to submit to CFI.  The result was highly successful we propose to follow a similar process in this competition.  However, to maintain a competitive advantage we are seeking your input on ideas regarding innovative supports to applicants.

Key changes to this completion include:

·      Encouragement of collaborative partnership

·      Engagement with end-users of research or technology development knowledge for benefits to Canadians

·      Minimum threshold of $500,000 total project cost

·      Construction costs are eligible

·      Each institution is permitted to participate in one multi-institutional project outside their envelope

We look forward to receiving your feedback regarding this competition
