Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program

Posted on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

This week, Alain Beaudet, president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, announced that potential candidates can now apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program at www.researchnet.ca.  For additional information, applicants can also visit the program website at www.banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program will fund 70 new two-year awards annually with 140 awards active at any one time at program maturity.  The fellowships, valued at $70,000/year (taxable), will be distributed equally across the three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

A unique aspect of this program is the requirement that research institutions be closely involved in endorsing applicants.  The institutions must be committed to providing a strong and supportive environment for research as well as fostering professional development of awardees.

Peer review will be a critical part of the selection process and the agencies will be taking steps to recruit members for each of our respective Banting peer reviewer committees very shortly. The membership of these committees is expected to reflect the calibre of the award itself, and will be comprised of reviewers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of research within their respective disciplines. If there are any potential reviewers from within your organization whom you would recommend for this prestigious program, you are invited to forward those recommendations to: banting@researchnet-recherchenet.ca.

Congrats Jores! How were you notified? What area of research are you in? I’m just curious as to what the “winner” profiles look like :)

Apparently all except SSHRC were mailed March 29. If you receive a response via courier, you got it…otherwise, you were not awarded. So, anybody who has not yet heard is not likely a winner…

Has anyone received the result or not? I am curious how Jores can know the result on March 23.
