Description

NSERC Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program: Timelines and Support

 The NSERC Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program is currently open for applications. The goal of the SPG program is to increase research and training in targeted areas that will strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years. The program is intended to increase the participation of Canadian companies and government organizations in academic research and enable the transfer of knowledge, technology and expertise to those organizations.

Target areas and research topics are as follows:

  •  Information and Communications Technologies
  • Environmental Science and Technologies
  • Manufacturing
  • Natural Resources and Energy

Highlights for the 2012 Strategic Project Grants Competition:

  •  New Deadline date – April 1, 2013
  • This year’s competition is expected to result in 12 – 15 awards per target area.  As a result of a low success rate in last year and the low number of awards NSERC is implementing the following measures for this year’s competition:
  1. Each application will be strictly screened for fit to program and fit to target area;
  2. Applications targeting incremental improvements to existing technologies will NOT be considered; and
  3. A pre-selection process will be invoked for all target areas to retain only the most promising proposals and achieve a nominal success ratio of 25 percent (i.e., approximately 50 to 60 applications per target area); results of the pre-selection process will be final.
  • Where a government organization is a supporting organization, the letter of support accompanying Form 183A must be signed by a director general (or equivalent level).
  • Co-applicants from outside the natural sciences and engineering may be incorporated into the proposals.
  • Applicants are encouraged to incorporate international collaborations into their proposals. Information concerning calls for collaborative proposals under international agreements will be updated in January 2011.

Critical Dates:
